AGRA: A local court in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district sentenced a 60-year-old man, Bhole Singh, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for committing dacoity in Basgoi village 41 years back.
The punishment was pronounced on Friday by additional sessions judge Mahendra Srivastava.
Speaking about the matter, Rajpal Singh Dishwar, additional district government counsel (ADGC), said, “The incident occurred on January 17, 1982, when seven men barged into a house owned by a man named Gordhan Lal, intending to rob him. However, hearing gunshot noises, villagers gathered at the spot and confronted the miscreants.”
“While five of the accused managed to escape, Bhole, a resident of Hathras, and Sughadpal, who died during the trial, were captured by the locals and handed over to police,” he added.
During investigation, the duo revealed the identity of other culprits — Ravinder, Vijender, Dhanvir, Mahipal, and Harpal (only first names available in police records).
The seven were booked under relevant IPC sections including 395 (punishment for dacoity), 397 (robbery or dacoity using a deadly weapon or causing grievous hurt), and Arms Act, 1959, at Sasni police station.
Despite multiple raids, police could not arrest the absconding culprits and they died during this period.
Meanwhile, Bhole and Sughadpal were released on bail after one year of their arrest. The trial had been ongoing since.
