SHIMLA: Six persons from Jammu and Kashmir, working as labourers, were killed while six others were injured when a vehicle carrying them fell into a gorge at Kadharghat in the Sunni sub-division of Shimla district on Monday.
The injured were taken to Sunni hospital from where they were referred to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla.
Of the 12 occupants, nine were from Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir.The deceased have been identified as Farid (24), Gulab (43), Sahbir (19), Talib (23), Gulzar (30), and Mustak (30), all from Kashmir, said superintendent of police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi.
The injured include driver Ranjit, Aslam, Talib Hussain, Akash Kumar, Ajay Thakur, and Manzoor, said the police.
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed grief over the death of six persons and directed the district authorities to provide immediate relief to the next of kin of the deceased and best possible treatment to the injured.
The accident took place at Kadharghat along the Sunni-Kingal link road around 7 am when the ill-fated vehicle carrying labourers was heading towards Mandi from Kadharghat.
After spotting the vehicle in the gorge, the locals immediately informed the police about the accident. A police team arrived at the spot and with the help of the locals launched a rescue operation. They pulled out the injured and shifted them to Sunni hospital.
According to information, three people had died on the spot, while three others succumbed to the injuries while being taken to the hospital. The police have registered a case in this regard and started further proceedings as per law.
