NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leaders led by Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee were detained from Krishi Bhavan late on Tuesday night after they staged a dharna in front of the office of junior minister for rural development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti in protest against the minister only agreeing to meet a five-member delegation and not the group of 40 that landed there.
Jyoti had given the TMC an appointment for 6 pm, but had said she would meet only a five-member team. The party, however, insisted that she would have to meet the entire group.
The standoff continued as the delegation sat on a dharna outside Krishi Bhawan for almost two hours after which the minister left. Later at night, the TMC contingent was detained by the Delhi Police.
Earlier in the day, Trinamool MPs, MLAs, panchayat leaders and MGNREGA workers protested at Jantar Mantar against non-payment of central dues to West Bengal. Leading the protest, Banerjee accused the Centre of trying to intimidate the protesters.
“Yesterday, they sent around 5,000 to 10,000 police personnel, RAF and other forces to stop 50 leaders of the TMC. Today as well, the number of security personnel here makes it appear as if India-China war is going on,” Banerjee said.
The TMC has accused the central government of withholding Rs 15,000 crore in dues to West Bengal under MGNREGA and PM Awas Yojana.
Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra said “The Centre was collecting taxes from West Bengal but not giving the state’s dues. We have not come here to beg but for our rights. Mamata Banerjee is fighting not only for Bengal but for the people of the entire country,” the leader said.
