The ODI World Cup is a stage which has seen some of the most mind boggling records being created over the years.
With the next edition of the showpiece event now around the corner, the TOI Sports Desk here looks at some of the most interesting India statistics at the ODI World Cup – from 1975 to 2019:
# India’s total of 370 for four vs Bangladesh at Mirpur on February 19, 2011 is the highest score on the opening day of any World Cup competition.It eclipsed England’s 334 for four vs India at Lord’s on June 7, 1975.
# Sachin Tendulkar remains the only batsman to register four successive fifties twice in the World Cup – 127 not out, 70, 90 & 137 between February 18, 1996 and March 2, 1996 and 81, 152, 50 & 98 between February 19, 2003 and March 1, 2003. Ten batsmen – Australia’s David Boon, India’s Navjot Singh Sidhu, England’s Graeme Fowler, South Africa’s Graeme Smith, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, Australia’s Steven Smith, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, England’s Jason Roy, India’s Virat Kohli & Australia’s Aaron Finch have achieved the distinction once each.

# Virender Sehwag‘s strike rate of 106.17 while amassing 843 runs at an average of 38.31 in 22 innings, including two hundreds and three fifties, is the highest by an Indian batsman. He remains the only second batsman after AB de Villiers to maintain a strike rate of 100-plus in the history of the World Cup (minimum qualification: 800 runs). De Villiers had managed 1207 runs at an average of 63.52, including four hundreds and six fifties, in 22 innings at a strike rate of 117.29.
# Sachin Tendulkar had amassed 673 runs at an average of 61.18, including a hundred and six fifties, in eleven innings in the 2002-03 competition. It remains a record for the most runs in a World Cup competition.
# Tendulkar remains the only batter to hit 75 fours (and four sixes) in a World Cup competition, accomplishing the feat in the 2002-03 tournament.

# Apart from his tally of 673 in 2002-03, Tendulkar had amassed 523 runs at an average of 87.16, including two hundreds and three fifties, in seven innings. He remains the only batsman to manage 500 runs or more in a World Cup competition twice.
# Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma jointly share a record for most hundreds (six) in the history of the World Cup.
# Virender Sehwag (175 off 140 balls) and Virat Kohli (100 not out off 83 balls) had recorded centuries vs Bangladesh at Mirpur on February 19, 2011 – the first instance of two hundreds registered for a team on the first day of any World Cup competition.
# Kohli had become the first Indian batter and the 13th overall to post a hundred on his World Cup debut. Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower remains the only batter to register a century on ODI debut in a World Cup game – 115 not out vs Sri Lanka at New Plymouth on February 23, 1992.
# Yuvraj Singh (50 not out + five for 31) remains the only Indian all-rounder to have achieved the double of a fifty and five wickets in a World Cup fixture – vs Ireland at Bengaluru on March 6, 2011.

# Rohit Sharma remains the only Indian batter to post three successive hundreds in the World Cup (in 2019) – 102 vs England at Birmingham on June 30, 2019; 104 vs Bangladesh at Birmingham on July 2 & 103 vs Sri Lanka at Leeds on July 6.
# Sehwag’s 175 vs Bangladesh at Mirpur on February 19, 2011 remains the highest individual score on the opening day in the history of the World Cup, outstripping Glenn Turner’s 171 vs East Africa at Birmingham on the opening day of the 1975 World Cup.
# Sachin Tendulkar had shared twelve century stands – a World Cup record. He is followed by Ricky Ponting (10) and Kumar Sangakkara (10).
# In all, Tendulkar shared 22 fifty-plus partnerships – a world cup record, followed by Ricky Ponting (21).
# Among the batters with 800-plus runs, Mohammed Azharuddin (826 at an average of 39.33 in 25 innings, including eight fifties) holds an Indian record of aggregating most runs without a century at the World Cup.
# Sachin Tendulkar registered 21.18% of his team’s aggregate overall – a world cup record – the next best being England’s Graham Gooch (21.06)
# Kapil Dev (175 not out out of 266 for eight vs Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells on June 18, 1983) scored 65.78% of team runs – a record by any batsman in the World Cup.

# Apart from becoming the first Indian batter to register a hundred in the World Cup, Kapil was also the first Indian bowler to produce a five-wicket haul in the competition – 5 for 43 vs Australia at Nottingham on June 13, 1983.
# Sachin Tendulkar has been adjudged the Man of the Match nine times – a World Cup record followed by six by Australia’s Glenn McGrath. Six other players have received five MOM awards each – Graham Gooch, AB de Villiers, Vivian Richards, Sanath Jayasuriya, Lance Klusener and Rohit Sharma.
# Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma remain the only Indian players to be adjudged Man of the Match on four occasions in a single World Cup. Yuvraj got one each vs Ireland, Netherlands, West Indies and Australia in 2010-11. Rohit received one each vs South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka.
# Javagal Srinath appeared in 34 consecutive appearances between February 1992 and March 2003 – the most by an Indian player in the World Cup. The next three in the list are Mohammad Azharuddin (30), Sachin Tendulkar (29) & Mahendra Singh Dhoni (29).
# Sachin Tendulkar holds a World Cup record by appearing in matches at most grounds (35). He is followed by three Sri Lankan players – Aravinda de Silva (34), Sanath Jayasuriya (33) & Muttiah Muralitharan (31) and Australia’s Ricky Ponting (30) and India’s Javagal
Srinath (30).
# An unbroken match-winning partnership of 126 between Kapil Dev (175 not out) and Syed Kirmani (24 not out) vs Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells on June 18, 1983 – a ninth-wicket partnership record in the World Cup. The said stand remains India’s highest for this wicket-position in ODIs.
# Sachin Tendulkar (140 not out) and Rahul Dravid (104 not out) shared an unbroken partnership of 237 for the third-wicket vs Kenya at Bristol on May 23, 1999 – a record by any pair for this wicket-position in the World Cup.
# Mohammad Kaif took four catches – two each off Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra – against Sri Lanka at Johannesburg on March 10, 2003 – the first fielder (and the only Indian) to accomplish the feat in the World Cup.
# Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin shared a partnership of 175 for the third wicket for India vs Sri Lanka at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi on March 2, 1996 – the highest partnership in a losing cause in the World Cup. In response to India’s 271 for three, Sri Lanka had scored 272 for four, winning by six wickets.
# Sachin Tendulkar faced 2560 balls while managing 2278 runs (a World Cup record) at an average of 56.95 in 45 games between 1992 and 2011 – the most by a batsman in the history of the World Cup. Ricky Ponting (2180) remains the only other batsman to face 2000 balls or more in the World Cup.
# Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly averaged 88.12 per dismissal while accumulating 705 runs in nine innings, including two century stands and a fifty-plus – the highest average by an Indian pair in the World Cup (minimum 500 runs).
# Mohammed Shami had produced three four-wicket hauls in the 2019 World Cup – 4 for 40 vs Afghanistan at Southampton on June 22; 4 for 16 vs West Indies at Manchester on June 27 and 5 for 69 vs England at Birmingham on June 30 to become the first and only Indian bowler to accomplish the feat thrice in a World Cup competition.
# By claiming the wickets off Mohammad Nabi, Aftab Alam and Mujeeb Ur Rahman off successive balls against Afghanistan on June 22, he had become the second Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma (vs New Zealand at Nagpur on October 31, 1987) to achieve a hat-trick in the World Cup.
# Kapil Dev managed strike Rate of 115.14 while aggregating 669 (ave.37.16), including a hundred and a fifty, in 24 innings – the highest by an Indian batsman in the World Cup (minimum 650 runs).
# Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir put on 109 for the fourth wicket vs Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 2, 2011 – India’s only century stand for any wicket in World Cup finals.
# Rohit Sharma top-scored in the 2019 competition, aggregating 648 at an average of 81.00, including five hundreds and a fifty, in nine innings.
# Rohit’s tally of five hundreds in the 2019 edition is an all-time record by a batter in a WC Competition.
