NEW DELHI: The Indian cricket team‘s preparations for their opening World Cup clash against Australia have taken an unexpected hit as star batter Shubman Gill battles health issues. Gill, who has been India’s most prolific batter in ODIs recently, is a doubtful starter for Sunday’s match against the formidable Australian team due to a bout of high fever.
According to a source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Gill’s condition has been a cause for concern since his arrival in Chennai.
“Shubhman has had a high fever since landing in Chennai. His tests are being done. He will have tests on Friday, and a call will be taken on his participation in the opening game,” stated the BCCI source on the condition of anonymity.

What’s causing even more apprehension is the possibility of dengue fever. Gill is reportedly being tested for dengue, a potentially serious mosquito-borne illness. In case the tests confirm dengue, Gill could be sidelined for not just one but possibly a couple of games. Recovery from dengue varies, and it typically takes around 7-10 days for patients to regain their fitness and be match-ready.
The source cautioned against jumping to conclusions, saying, “Let’s not jump the gun. If it’s a normal viral fever, he could play on antibiotics, but it’s completely the medical team’s call.”

As Gill’s health hangs in the balance, the Indian team management may need to consider alternative options. There’s speculation that young talent Ishan Kishan could step in to open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma if Gill is ruled out. The final decision, however, hinges on Gill’s health and the recommendations of the medical professionals.
