As most users would have seen it coming, Netflix has almost ‘killed’ its basic ad-free tier. The company has removed its $9.99 “Basic” subscription tier for anybody trying to sign up for a new account or resubscribe in the US and UK. The plan was priced at $9.99 per month in the U.S. and 6.99 pounds per month in the UK. “The Basic plan is no longer available for new or rejoining members. If you are currently on the Basic plan, you can remain on this plan until you change plans or cancel your account,” the support page on Netflix reads.
In June, Netflix pulled the plug on the same plan in Canada. This means that it is likely to follow this strategy in other countries as well. The company made no formal announcements anywhere about these changes in plans.
Netflix first introduced an ad-supported plan in Canada and Mexico in November 2022. This was followed by launch in other countries including the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, Korea and Brazil. However, India is still not on the list. “… while it’s still very early days, we’re pleased with the interest from both consumers and the advertising community”, before adding that, “as we learn from and improve the experience, we expect to launch in more countries over time,” is what Netflix had said about the plans rolled out to other countries later. Netflix’s “Standard with ads” plan supports simultaneous streaming on two devices and full HD resolution.
Netflix pricing in India
* Mobile: Rs 149 per month (Watch on 1 phone or tablet at a time)
* Basic: Rs 199 per month (Watch on 1 supported device at a time)
* Standard: Rs 499 per month (Watch on 2 supported devices at a time)
* Premium: Rs 649 per month (Watch on 4 supported devices at a time)
