OnePlus Open: OnePlus’ first foldable phone’s name, launch date confirmed

OnePlus has ended the suspense about the name of its first foldable smartphone. While there have been rumours suggesting the phone’s moniker, company president and COO Kinder Liu has confirmed that the foldable smartphone will be called the OnePlus Open. He also revealed the launch date of the smartphone.
“Great to chat to the team at @verge and reveal the name of our first foldable – #OnePlusOpen!,” he said in a post on X.

The company announced that it will bring its first foldable smartphone at MWC this year. Speaking at the “From Fast & Smooth to Beyond” panel discussion at MWC 2023, Liu said that OnePlus’ foldable smartphone will bring the fastest phone experience in today’s foldable market.
“It must be a flagship phone that doesn’t settle because of its folding form, in terms of industrial design, mechanical technology, and other aspects,” he told the select media gathering, which was attended by TOI Tech-Gadgets Now.
OnePlus Open has reportedly been delayed multiple times and this became apparent when other Chinese companies launched foldable phones. In fact, its sister brand Oppo has launched two foldable smartphones. But Liu said the company didn’t want to rush.
“To be honest, we’ve been thinking about launching a foldable for a while. We spent the last two years researching and developing prototypes, and we wanted to launch it earlier. However, in early stages, we met technical challenges,” he told The Verge.
He noted that the company didn’t want to rush to market and delayed releasing it until the product was fully ready.
Oppo Find N3 and OnePlus Open are the same phones
Recently, Oppo chief product officer Peter Lau, who co-founded OnePlus, confirmed that the OnePlus Open is a rebranded version of the Oppo Find N3 saying both the companies are releasing the same foldable phone under different names.
He said that he directed teams at both companies to develop the phone, which is expected to be released in different markets, however, he did not mention any specific markets or regions where the respective phones will be launched.
