MUMBAI: A few days after India ended its campaign at the Asian Games with an unprecedented 107 medals, PM Narendra Modi on Saturday confirmed India would bid for the 2036 Olympic Games in its attempt to bring the world’s biggest sporting extravaganza to the country.
Modi said India would bid to host the 2036 Olympics and leave “no stone unturned”. “Indians are very excited about hosting the Olympics Games. This is the age-old dream of 140 crore (1.4 billion) Indians, it is their aspiration,” Modi said in an address to the opening ceremony of the 141st session of International Olympic Committee here. “We want to realise this dream with your collaboration and support… I am confident that India will get the support of the IOC,” he said, referring to the tradition of sports in India dating back to the Indus Valley Civilisation (Rakhi Garhi inscriptions). He said “Indians are not just sports lovers, but we also live it and the country is also eager to host the Youth Olympics in 2029”.
The PM said India has the infrastructure, logistics and necessary organisational capability to host global events. He gave the example of the G20 Summit and India’s presidency during which events were organised in more than 60 cities of the country and said that it is proof of India’s organising capacity in every sector.
India has often expressed interest in hosting Olympics
Modi cited India’s recent achievements in the international sports arena — last edition of Olympics and the historic performance in the just-concluded Asiad while referring to “Khelo India” initiative undertaken by the government to boost sports.
He mentioned the recently-hosted global tournaments such as the Chess Olympiad, which witnessed the participation of 186 countries, Football Under-17 Women’s World Cup, Hockey World Cup, Women’s World Boxing Championship, Shooting World Cup and the ongoing Cricket World Cup. He also pointed out that India organises the largest cricket league in the world (IPL) every year.
Modi’s announcement also comes a day after the IOC Executive Board approved inclusion of T20 cricket at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Modi’s announcement comes after some of his cabinet ministers have, in the recent past, voiced the nation’s interest in hosting the Summer Games.
In an exclusive interview to TOI last December, Union sports minister Anurag Thakur had revealed that the government would back an Indian Olympic Association (IOA) bid for the 2036 Olympics. While Modi did not disclose a potential host city, Thakur had mentioned Ahmedabad as a likely candidate. India is expected to present a roadmap related to its Olympic bid during the three-day IOC session which gets underway on Sunday. The country is hosting the IOC session after 40 years, with the last session being held in New Delhi in 1983. “Your presence here today, dear Prime Minister, is a testimony to the growing importance of Olympic sport in your wonderful country,” said IOC president Thomas Bach at Saturday’s opening ceremony.
