NAVI MUMBAI: A businessman’s bodyguard was arrested in a case of road rage on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway late Saturday. The bodyguard allegedly smashed the windscreen of a private bus with a hockey stick and fired a bullet at the driver after a near-collision with the BMW of the Pune businessman’s family.
Around 11.15pm, the driver of the Hyderabad-bound bus moved from the third lane to the second as a truck had broken down ahead. The BMW, which was right behind, screeched to a sudden halt to avert a collision, according to the bus driver’s statement to the police.

Soon after, the car revved up, overtook the bus and intercepted it a few metres away. The bodyguard, Mahindra Dhahire (35), emerged from the BMW with a hockey stick and smashed the windscreen of the bus, leaving the road with a carpet of glass shards, said senior inspector of Khopoli police station, Shital Raut.

“The bodyguard then dragged the bus driver, Channapbasappa Mulage (47), out of the driver’s cabin and assaulted him. He then brought out a pistol and fired one round at the driver who ducked, escaping injury,” said the inspector. With traffic jammed around the stretch of the carriageway, a few officials from the Bhor ghat traffic police booth, which is located a distance away, rushed to the spot and alerted officials of Khopoli police station. The arrested bodyguard has been charged with ‘attempt to murder’ and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code as well as the Arms Act.
