NEW DELHI: Ahead of the festive season, the government approved a 4% hike in dearness allowance and dearness relief (DR) for around 1.2 crore central government employees and pensioners. The Union Cabinet also approved productivity linked bonus (PLB) for 11 lakh railway employees, equivalent to their 78 days wages for financial year 2022-23.
While the hike in DA and DR will cost the exchequer Rs 12,857 crore, the railways will pay the Rs 1,969 crore to all its eligible non-gazetted employees such as track maintainer, loco pilots, train managers, station masters, supervisors and other Group ‘C’ staff. Though both the decisions are routine ones, the additional cash in the hands of government employees just ahead of the festive season comes as a boost to the circular economy.
The government, said that the DA and DR hike will be implemented from July 1, 2023. While the DA is for serving central government employees, the DR is for pensioners. With this increase, the DA and DR will be increased from 42% to 46%. This increase follows the formula recommended by the 7th Central Pay Commission. The Centre had last raised the allowance in March this year by 4% – from 38% to 42%.
This allowance for employees and pensioners is worked out on the basis of the latest Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers brought out by the labour bureau every month. On Tuesday, the Diwali bonuses for Group C and non-gazetted Group B level officials, including paramilitary forces, was approved by the government. With respect to the PLB for railway employees, the national transporter said the performance of Indian Railways in 2022-2023 loaded a record cargo of 1,509 million tonnes and carried nearly 6.5 billion passengers. tnn
