NEW DELHI: Joined by several opposition parties, Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday said she was ‘shocked and ashamed’ over New Delhi’s decision to abstain from voting on the UN resolution on Gaza. “To refuse to take a stand and watch in silence as every law of humanity is pulverised and food, water, medical supplies, communication and power is cut off as people in Palestine are being annihilated goes against everything our country has stood for,” she said.
NCP’s Sharad Pawar said there was confusion , with the PM and foreign minister speaking in different voices.
BJP said India’s position has been consistent and that it will ‘never be on the side of terrorism.’ India’s explanation of the vote spelt this out clearly, the party said.

Congress and Left parties attacked the Modi government over its decision to abstain from voting on UN resolution on Gaza, drawing a sharp riposte from BJP which stressed that the resolution was silent on Hamas’ brutality and India could “never be on the side of terrorism”, while also calling the opponents out over their participation in a rally allegedly addressed by a leader of Hamas.
Objecting to India’s stand over the resolution, Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi said an ‘eye-for-an-eye’ makes the whole world go blind, and added that India was founded on the principles of non-violence and truth which represent the “moral courage of India that guided its actions as a member of the international community”. “To refuse to take a stand and watch in silence as every law of humanity is pulverised and food, water, medical supplies, communication and power is cut off as people in Palestine are being annihilated goes against everything our country has stood for,” she said.

BJP hit back with senior party leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi saying in a series of posts on X: “Those who are ‘ashamed and shocked’, must realise that India will NEVER be on the side of terrorism.”

India abstained from voting, saying the resolution didn’t mention the terror strike by Hamas on Israel on October 7, stoking the latest conflict.
Asserting that India’s position on the Palestine issue is steadfast and consistent, the BJP leader said that those who choose to side with terror do so at their own peril.

BJP took the battle to the rival terrain by attacking Congress and Left over their participation in rally organised by the youth wing of Jamat-i-Islami in Kerala, which was allegedly addressed by Hamas leader Khaled Mashal. Describing Hamas as a terror outfit, BJP general secretary Dushyant Gautam said Congress and Left parties were guilty of “anti-national conduct”.
BJP spokesperson Anil Baluni said, “Congress is driven by the policy of appeasement and its views on Gaza reflect that it can go to any extent for vote-bank.”

NCP chief Sharad Pawar said, “I’ve never seen such confusion in India’s position on the Israel-Palestine issue. When PM Modi issued a statement, he spoke of extending total support to Israel. When reactions to this statement started to be seen around the world & within India, foreign minister issued a statement in support of Palestine … Thousands of people are dying in Gaza. India has never supported such violence.”
Calling Israel’s attacks on Gaza as “genocidal”, Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja expressed shock over India’s abstention and called for an immediate ceasefire. They alleged that India’s foreign policy was being “shaped by being a subordinate ally of US imperialism and the Modi government’s actions for consolidating the US-Israel-India nexus”.
