Google is releasing a new Android-specific API known as Credential Manager. This new API will allow Android apps to have better built-in passkey support.
What is a passkey
Passkeys are a more secure and convenient alternative to passwords, allowing users to log in using biometric sensors like facial recognition or fingerprint, patterns, or a PIN. While passwords will still be an option, Google is encouraging users and developers to opt for passkeys, and the Credential Manager API ensures more apps can support this.
Credential Manager, which has been in developer preview for months, is set to go public on November 1.It houses biometric authentication of passkeys, traditional passwords, and federated identity login under one roof in Android phones. This API will make it easier for developers to store credentials such as username and password combinations and passkeys securely.
“Passkeys add an additional layer of security for WhatsApp users. Simplifying the way users can securely get into their account will help our users, which is why the Credential Manager API is so important,” said Nitin Gupta, Head of Engineering at WhatsApp.
WhatsApp recently brought the “passwordless passkey” to Android, allowing WhatsApp users to unlock and access their accounts using their device’s face, fingerprint, or pin security.
In Android 14, the upcoming change will enable apps to provide improved authentication support. By using the Credential Manager, apps can offer hassle-free biometric logins through passkeys. This approach will make the login process more seamless since users won’t have to worry about remembering their login information.
Third-party password managers can also integrate the API for an even more streamlined experience when defaulting to such an alternative instead of Google Password Manager.
