BHUBANESHWAR: An absconding 54-year-old Indian Air Force officer accused of sexually assaulting the 13-year-old daughter of a family friend in June surrendered in the sub-divisional magistrate’s court in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
Korimili Venkata Sreenivas, whose family lives in the Old Town neighbourhood of the Odisha capital, was home on leave from his station in Delhi when the alleged crime was reported.
On June 28, the Bhubaneswar police commissionerate registered a case against Sreenivas, based on a complaint by the survivor’s mother. The complainant is a close friend of his wife.
“The family of the accused hosted a party in their home on June 23, to which the survivor’s mother had been invited. The girl’s mother arrived early, and Sreenivas offered to pick up her daughter later,” police officer Shyam Sundar Rao said. “Finding the girl alone at home, he allegedly sexually assaulted her.”
Cops said Sreenivas absconded after the class 8 student‘s mother reported the alleged crime.
“He didn’t respond to our summons. We looked for him at several places, including his workplace, but he was nowhere to be found until his surrender,” Rao said. The sub-divisional magistrate remanded Sreenivas in judicial custody.
