Apple has officially launched its latest generation of M-series processors, the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. These new chips are built on TSMC’s 3nm process and promise significant performance and efficiency improvements over their predecessors.
The M3 is the base model in the new lineup, and it features up to 8 CPU cores (4 performance and 4 efficiency) and 10 GPU cores. This represents a 20% increase in CPU cores and a 30% increase in GPU cores over the M2.
The M3 Pro is a more powerful chip with up to 12 CPU cores (6 performance and 6 efficiency) and 18 GPU cores. This represents a 25% increase in CPU cores and a 40% increase in GPU cores over the M2 Pro.
The M3 Max is the most powerful chip in the new lineup, and it features up to 16 CPU cores (12 performance and 4 efficiency) and 32 GPU cores. This represents a 33% increase in CPU cores and a 66% increase in GPU cores over the M2 Max.
Increased GPU capabilities
The GPU is faster and more efficient, and introduces a new technology called Dynamic Caching, while bringing new rendering features like hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading to Mac for the first time
In addition to the increased core counts, the new M3 chips also feature a number of other architectural improvements, including a new Neural Engine core, a new Media Engine, and a new Unified Memory controller. These improvements should result in significant performance and efficiency gains across a wide range of tasks.
M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max also have an enhanced Neural Engine to accelerate powerful machine learning (ML) models. The Neural Engine is up to 60 percent faster than in the M1 family of chips, making AI/ML workflows even faster while keeping data on device to preserve privacy.
