JAMMU: A major tragedy was averted on Saturday with the timely detection and destruction of a timer-based improvised explosive device (IED) that had been concealed in a tiffin box and planted along the Sidhra-Narwal stretch of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway near a police checkpoint.
“Around 5.30pm, information was received about a suspicious object lying on the highway stretch.A police team along with a dog squad rushed to the spot and found a tiffin box containing a timer-based IED weighing around 2kg. The explosive was seized after successful detonation,” said a police spokesperson.
“A case under relevant sections of the law has been registered and further investigation is underway,” said the spokesperson.
This is not an isolated case of explosives being planted along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Earlier on August 22, police found an IED along the NH which was subsequently defused by security personnel in Panjgrain, Nagrota, on the outskirts of Jammu.
