SURAT: A 26-year-old man employed as a tailor in a textile unit in Surat has been apprehended for allegedly impersonating an IPS officer, according to police.
The impersonator, identified as Mohammad Sarmaj Alam, hailing from Bihar and with an education up to the 10th grade, was found to have a penchant for donning police attire and parading in public places to impress onlookers, stated DCP Bhagirath Gadhavi.
Alam was known to frequent shops and relished being photographed while dressed in police uniform. He professed to have drawn inspiration from TV shows such as Crime Patrol, Gadhavi added.
Acting on a specific tip-off that a man, posing as a police officer, was flagging down vehicles on a road in Udhna area of the city, police officers promptly arrived at the scene and apprehended Alam. He was dressed in khaki uniform and was wearing the shoulder badges typical of IPS officers, according to Gadhavi.
The authorities discovered a toy walkie-talkie set, a cigarette lighter resembling a pistol, a badge from the Andhra Pradesh Police, and another police uniform in his possession. Alam, originally from Bihar, had studied up to the 10th grade and had been employed as a tailor in Surat’s textile industry for the past seven years, the DCP revealed.
Alam admitted to purchasing the IPS badge from an online retailer. He explained to the police that he enjoyed wearing khaki uniforms to make an impression on people, and this was the first instance in which he had donned IPS shoulder badges.
Previously, he had roamed the market while wearing a police uniform but had not worn IPS badges. He used to frequent shops and enjoyed being photographed in the uniform. According to Gadhavi, it seems he had not engaged in extortion or fraudulent activities while posing as a police officer.
Alam has been arrested on charges of impersonation under sections 170 and 171 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
