Elon Musk-led artificial intelligence startup xAI has recently launched its first-ever product to compete with OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT and others. The billionaire unveiled the company’s first AI model, a bot named Grok and made it available to all X Premium+ subscribers last week. Muskwho also owns the social media platform X is also planning to integrate the AI company into the microblogging site.In a recent post on X, Musk also confirmed that xAI will also be available as a standalone app.
What is xAI and how is different from other AI companies
Musk launched the xAI startup in July after criticising the AI efforts of other major tech companies as ridden with censorship. The billionaire described the company’s Grok AI model as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that tries to understand the nature of the universe to rival Google’s Bard and Microsoft‘s Bing AI.
He added: “Grok has real-time access to info via the X platform, which is a massive advantage over other models”.
Musk also owns the social media firm X (previously known as Twitter) which is separate from xAI. However, both these companies work closely together. The AI startup also works closely with its electric car maker Tesla and other companies.

Last week, at the first global AI Safety Summit held in Bletchley Park, England, Musk said to UK PM Rishi Sunak that he thought AI was “the most disruptive force in history.” The billionaire also speculated that the technology will be able to “do everything” and make the current employment process a thing of the past.

Musk also co-founded the Microsoft-backed AI research startup, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT in 2015. Soon after its launch, the chatbot created a frenzy for generative AI technology around the world. However, Musk stepped down from the company’s board in 2018.
xAI’s Grok chatbot is now available for all X Premium+ subscribers. The social media platform currently offers two Premium+ subscription plans — a $16 per month Premium+ tier that offers an ad-free experience and basic $3 per month basic tier. Users can also opt for the X Premium tier which is priced at $8 per month.
