It has been three years since Apple began transitioning to its in-house chips for Macs, and while most of the machines are now running the Apple Silicon, the 27-inch iMac is one the few that are not. And, if you were waiting for one with a new chip, then there is some bad news for you. There will not be one, as Apple has no plans to refresh it with a M-series chip.
Starlayne Meza, an Apple PR representative, confirmed to The Verge that it won’t be releasing a larger iMacanytime soon.Instead, Apple suggests users consider theStudio Display and Mac Studio or Mac mini, which come with a 27-inch 5K screen and a separate computer, as an alternative to the all-in-one design of the iMac.
The last refresh of the 27-inch iMac was in 2020, which included an Intel processor but no redesign.
Apple has launched a new 24-inch iMac with a 4.5K display, which is placed between the 21-inch 4K and 27-inch 5K models. However, the base model of the 24-inch iMac is not equipped with Apple’s most powerful processors. Previously, Intel iMacs could be equipped with high-end processors and discrete GPUs that made them powerful machines, which is not the case with new 24-inch ones since they are powered by the base M series chips.
A 32-inch iMac reportedly under development
Though, it does not mean that Apple is not working on a larger iMac. There have been reports of a 32-inch iMac being under development.
Recent rumours suggest that Apple has been experimenting with monitors that have 32-inch displays. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests that a 32-inch is being developed, but that will not be coming anytime soon. If Gurman is to be believed, the 32-inch iMac is expected to launch in 2025. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo corroborated Gurman’s report, saying that Apple is developing a high-end 32-inch iMac that features a miniLED display, which will be launched in 2025.
