Nintendo is developing a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, according to an announcement made by the company. Sony will handle the theatrical distribution of the movie upon release.
The movie will be directed by Wes Ball, who is best known for his work on the Maze Runner trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Zelda, will serve as a producer, just like he did on this year’s animated Super MarioBros.movie. Miyamoto will produce the film alongsideAvi Arad. Avi has been associated with multiple superhero projects, including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Iron Man, Blade, Uncharted, and the upcoming Borderlands movie.
“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” wrote the creator of Zelda, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
Nintendo has announced that it will be financing more than 50% of the production of the upcoming Zelda movie. The company has expressed its intention to get deeply involved in the movie production with the goal of bringing entertainment that will put smiles on everyone’s faces.
One of Nintendo’s most successful franchises is Zelda. Its two latest games are ranked among the top 10 best-selling Switch games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, released in 2017, was a launch title for the Switch and a must-have game that helped skyrocket the console’s early sales.
Earlier this year, Nintendo released The Super Mario Bros Movie, which raked in over a billion dollars in collections worldwide.
