NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha Ethics Panel report was adopted with Congress’ suspended MP Preenet Kaur, who is the wife of BJP leader Amarinder Singh, Shiv Sena’s Hemant Godse, BJP MPs Sumedhanand Saraswati, Aparajita Sarangi and Rajdeep Roy besides chairman Vinod Sonkar voting in favour of adopting the 500-page report. BSP MP Danish Ali, PR Natarajan (CPM), V Vaithilingam (Congress) and Giridhar Yadav (JDU) voted against the adoption of the report, sources said.
The panel also noted that the allegations that TMC’s Mahua Moitra accepted “illegal gratifications” from Hiranandani have been clearly established, sources said, adding that it went by her own deposition and her remarks to the media.
However, in reference to the allegations that she also accepted cash from the businessman, the panel has acknowledged that it does not have the technical wherewithal and expertise to criminally investigate and unearth the money trail.
This is invariably the task of central government institutions, sources said citing its observations. The panel has recommended that any “quid pro quo” could be investigated by the government in a time-bound manner. The report, sources said, has stressed that outsiders with access to Parliament login ID could plant material into the system that could impact national security by creating false documents or fake narratives. Four opposition members said the panel’s recommendation was “prejudiced” and “incorrect”.
The panel was told that the portal hosts many documents, including draft bills circulated in advance to lawmakers, that are not available in the public domain.
“Such leak of credentials could render the system vulnerable to cyber-attacks and potentially disable the system entirely, crippling the functioning of India’s Parliament,” the panel is learnt to have concluded in its report.
Although specific findings and other contents of the report are likely to be made public only after it is submitted to Speaker, sources said that the committee has recommended the expulsion of Moitra as an MP.
BJP’s Vishnu Datt Sharma arrived late for the meeting. Four members of the panel, who could not attend the meeting, included BJP’s Sunita Duggal, Subhash Bhamre, N Uttam Kumar Reddy (Cong) & Balashowry Vallabbhaneni (YSRCP).
