MUMBAI: Three persons of a family, including a 91-year-old man, died and six persons were injured – two are in ICU – after a speeding black MUV heading towards Gujarat hit multiple vehicles in the last stretch of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and at the toll plaza before grinding to a halt on Thursday night.
The driver survived with a fracture and has been charged under the stringent IPC sec 304(II) (act done with the knowledge it is likely to cause death), among others, that could attract life imprisonment. He will be arrested once discharged, said police.
Rajshree Ghildiyal, 56, a housewife from Powai, and her chauffeur Rakesh Vishwakarma are in ICU, after the black Innova rammed into their maroon Mobilio.
Sarfaraz Shaikh, 55, first hit the guardrails on the northbound carriageway of the sea link about 200m from the toll plaza, and scraped against a Mercedes as he steered sharply right. Instead of halting, he tried to speed away but rammed into the Mobilio and other cars in the toll lane around 10.15pm.
The mayhem at the Bandra-Worli Sea Link on Thursday that claimed three lives was over in 15 minutes. Driver Sarfaraz Shaikh, at the wheel of a Gujarat-registered black Innova, is suspected by cops to have dozed off and hit the guardrails of the BWSL and then grazed a Mercedes SUV while trying to correct course.
“Shaikh, instead of stopping and taking control of his Innova car, accelerated and tried to escape. However, he failed to get a free lane at the toll plaza. He first hit a plinth and slammed into a Mobilio, which took the maximum impact, before hitting two other cars ahead,” said a Bandra police officer.
