NEW DELHI: The Congress, which faces relentless BJP onslaught over corruption charges in Chhattisgarh, is trying to exert similar pressure on the saffron party in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. Citing a purported video, the Congress has alleged that the son of Union minister Narendra Tomar was cutting a deal of “Rs 500 crore” and sought suo motu money laundering probe into the matter by the Enforcement Directorate.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, addressing a rally in the poll-bound state on Monday, alleged that the BJP has broken all records of corruption in Madhya Pradesh.
“They have a minister who is called Tomar. Did you see a video of his son? Whose money was he talking about? It is your money. It is the money of the people of Madhya Pradesh. Money from your pocket. All his ministers do this,” Rahul said.
Training his guns at Prime Minister Modi, Rahul said: “There have been numerous scams in the state under the BJP. The video of Devendra Tomar, Mahakal Corridor scam, midday meal scam, Vyapam scam, Patwari exams scam, MBBS seats scam … but not once does Narendra Modi order an investigation.”
Rahul said that the video in question showed the son of Union minister “stealing money of farmers, the poor and labourers” and asked if the Narendra Modi government had sent the Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation and the Income Tax department to probe.
Screening the video, Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak said 50 per cent commission had become synonymous with the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Madhya Pradesh.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan must break their silence on such a big case of corruption. The ED should take sou motu action and register a money laundering case,” she told reporters.
“Give a clarification or dismiss it. If they don’t, then it will be construed that this has their patronage and involvement,” she added.
Asked about the video, Union minister Tomar, while talking to reporters in Gwalior, said, “We should not waste time on fake talks”.
His son has already claimed that the video is fake and has also got an FIR registered against unidentified persons in this connection.
‘Kamal Nath government indulged in numerous scams’
Union home minister Amit Shah, meanwhile, unleashed a counter-offensive against the Congress and accused the Kamal Nath government of large-scale corruption during its short tenure of 1.5 years.
“Kamal Nath government closed 51 welfare schemes in their short tenure. If they return to power, they will stop the Ladli Laxmi scheme. Kamal Nath government indulged in numerous scams,” Amit Shah and went on to allege scams like the Agusta Westland scam, IFFCO fertiliser scam, wheat purchase scam.
Amit Shah also accused the Congress of ignoring the Other Backward Classes, which comprise the biggest chunk of the country’s population, during its rule of several decades.
“The Congress put the Mandal Commission report in cold storage for many years. (Former prime minister) Rajiv Gandhi opposed the implementation of the Mandal Commission. The Backward Classes Commission was not given constitutional recognition for 70 years,” Shah said.
Kamal Nath, meanwhile, claimed that under the BJP rule Madhya Pradesh has become the most corrupt state in the country and that every citizen here is either a victim of corruption or has witnessed it.
