Firing: UK PM Rishi Sunak faces first no-confidence letter following cabinet rejig

NEW DELHI: UK prime minister Rishi Sunak has been hit with his first no confidence letter after firing interior minister Suella Braverman.
Rishi Sunak’s party member, Andrea Jenkyns, wrote a letter to 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady criticising Sunak for “getting rid of our democratically elected leader Boris Johnson”, and said , “Enough is enough”.

Forcing Boris Johnson out was “unforgivable enough”, but “to purge the centre-right from his cabinet and then sack Suella who was the only person in the cabinet with the balls to speak the truth of the appalling state of our streets and a two-tier policing system that leaves Jewish community in fear for their lives and safety”, she said adding that she submitted her no confidence letter in Rishi Sunak “to stand up and fight for true Conservatism”.
“If it wasn’t bad enough that we have a party leader that the party members rejected, the polls demonstrate that the public reject him, and I am in full agreement. It is time for Rishi Sunak to go,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

A vote of confidence in Rishi Sunak’s leadership within the Conservative Party would be initiated if 15 percent of the party’s Members of Parliament (MPs) sent letters indicating their choice for a new leader.

In a recent reshuffle, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed former UK Prime Minister David Cameron as the foreign minister. This reshuffle was prompted by Sunak’s decision to remove Suella Braverman from her position after she criticized the police.
The reshuffle came about because Suella Braverman faced growing criticism from opposition politicians and members of the Conservative Party. Suella Braverman, who is of Indian origin, had written an article without authorization last week, in which she accused the police of having “double standards” during protests. She suggested that they were tough on right-wing demonstrators but lenient with pro-Palestinian marchers.
Additionally, in this reshuffle, UK Environment Secretary Therese Coffey stepped down, stating in her resignation letter that it was time for her to take a step back. Former Health Secretary Steve Barclay was chosen to replace her, and Victoria Atkins took over Steve Barclay’s former role in the Department of Health. Richard Holden was appointed as the new party chairman, replacing Greg Hands.
