MUMBAI: Local authorities on Wednesday arrested a 38-year-old man on charges of allegedly raping a female doctor and later engaging in blackmail, as reported by the police.
Last week, the woman filed a complaint at the Gamdevi police station in South Mumbai, according to an official statement.
The complainant informed the police that the accused had developed a friendship with her during badminton sessions at a club in the Tardeo area.
During this period, the woman was not residing with her husband due to domestic issues.
The accused, however, began gossiping about her personal life, prompting her to question him, as stated by the official.
On August 20, he requested to meet her to discuss the issue.
During their meeting at a club in the Marine Drive area, the accused allegedly spiked her drink, according to the complainant.
Subsequently, he accompanied her to her residence in a car, where they consumed some wine.
While she was under the influence of alcohol, the woman informed the police that he sexually assaulted her.
In October, he requested money from her.
Initially, she complied, but when she later refused, the accused allegedly threatened to disclose videos, images, and chats to her husband and friends, as per the complainant’s statement.
Reportedly, she handed over Rs 3.33 lakh to him, but when she found herself unable to continue making payments, she approached the police.
The man has been arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (rape) and 384 (extortion), and further investigation is underway, as stated by the official.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault.)
