GUWAHATI: An 80-year-old widow of a freedom fighter was burnt alive inside her home in Serou village of Kakching district on May 28 during the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. The couple’s son, Dr S Ibomcha, is now seeking justice for his mother’s cold-blooded killing and questioning what PM Narendra Modi has to say about the heinous act.

According to Ibomcha, armed militants attacked their village early in the morning from multiple sides.

“My mother, unable to flee due to her age, instructed us to run to safety while she stayed behind. Tragically, when we returned later, we found her burnt body. The assailants had locked her inside the house and set it ablaze,” he said on Sunday.Ibomcha, who is a former vice president of Manipur Peoples Party, is determined to seek justice for his mother’s horrifying death and sought the PM’s attention to this grave matter. “What will our PM say about my mother who was burnt alive in her home,” he said, expressing concern about the safety and security of the people in their own land.

During the attack, Ibomcha’s nephew attempted to rescue his grandmother, but was shot and is currently receiving treatment at RIMS hospital in Imphal. In retaliation, the state forces confronted the militants, resulting in the death of one “miscreant” in the middle of Serou Bazar.

Ibomcha’s father, Sorkhaibam Churachan Meitei, was born on May 28, 1918, in Sylhet district (now in Bangladesh), and passed away on July 28, 2005, in Serou village. A plaque bearing his name proudly highlights his significant contributions to India’s freedom struggle. He actively participated in the “No Tax” movement in Sylhet from 1931 to 1932 and played a crucial role in the Quit India movement in 1942.

As a tribute to his dedication and bravery, he was bestowed with the prestigious Tamra Patra for his remarkable contributions to India’s freedom struggle and was honoured by then President APJ Abdul Kalam in 2004.
Ibomcha asked: “Is Manipur government planning to keep the Meitei people as refugees in their own land? If the Meitei indigenous people cannot be protected at their own places by providing adequate security forces, what is the government for?”
