The India-Australia final match created a record peak viewership of 5.9 crore on Disney+Hotstar as crores of Indians sat in front of their screens hoping that the men in blue would win the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
With this, the platform surpassed its previous peak concurrency of 5.3 crore viewership record in the India-New Zealand semi-final match.Peak concurrency is the highest number of viewers during a live stream.
Television viewership numbers expected next week
Sunday’s final match was also telecast live by Disney Star on the Star Sports network but viewership numbers will be released a week later by television audience measurement body Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC).
“With a staggering 5.9 crore concurrent viewers tuning in on Disney+ Hotstar for the final … higher than any peak concurrency record set before the tournament — the unwavering support of Indian cricket fans has consistently propelled us to new heights in live sports streaming,” said Sajith Sivanandan, head Disney+ Hotstar India.
The platform has also recorded a peak concurrency of 4.3 crore peak concurrent viewers during the India Vs New Zealand match, and 4.4 crore peak concurrent viewers during the India Vs South Africa match. The India-Pakistan league match in the tournament recorded a peak concurrency of 3.5 crore.
Screening by PVR INOX
The India-Australia final match was also screened by leading multiplex operator PVR INOX at 150 cinemas in over 60 cities comprising major metros, Tier-1, 2 and 3 cities. Over 70,000 cricket fans watched the match when it started translating to over 70% occupancy, added Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, PVR INOX Ltd Executive Director.
Peak concurrency on JioCinema
Earlier this year, Mukesh Ambani-backed Viacom18’s JioCinema peaked at 3.2 crore earlier this year when the platform streamed IPL live. Hotstar currently maintains a lead over its rival.
