NEW DELHI: In a setback for Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner, Rashid Khan, has made the difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming tournament due to a back injury that requires minor surgery. Khan, the world’s top-ranked Twenty20 bowler, was slated to play for the Adelaide Strikers for the seventh consecutive year in the BBL set to commence next month.
The Adelaide Strikers’ general manager, Tim Nielson, expressed the club’s disappointment at losing Khan for the season. In a statement, Nielson said, “Rashid is a beloved member of the Strikers and a fan favourite who has been with us for seven years, so he will be extremely missed this summer.”
Despite the setback, the Strikers remain supportive of Khan’s decision, emphasising their commitment to his long-term well-being in the sport. Nielson added, “Rashid loves Adelaide and the Strikers, and we know how much he loves playing in the BBL, and we support him as he has treatment for this injury to ensure his long-term involvement in the game.”
Rashid Khan, who burst onto the scene as a 19-year-old in 2017, has been a consistent performer for the Strikers, amassing 98 wickets in 69 matches with remarkable figures of 6-17. His absence is a significant blow to the team and adds to the challenges faced by the BBL, especially after the recent withdrawal of England’s hard-hitting batter, Harry Brook, who opted out of playing for the Melbourne Stars due to workload concerns.
