Marlon Samuels receives six-year ban for anti-corruption code violation | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former West Indies cricket star Marlon Samuels has been handed a six-year ban from all forms of cricket after being found guilty of breaching the Emirates Cricket Board‘s Anti-Corruption Code during his participation in a T10 league in the United Arab Emirates.
The ban, imposed by sport’s world body, comes as a blow to the 42-year-old cricketer, who retired from international cricket in 2020 and has since retired from all forms of the game.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that one of the charges against Samuels was related to his failure to disclose “the receipt of any gift, payment, hospitality, or other benefit” that could bring him or the sport of cricket into disrepute. The ban serves as a strong deterrent against any participant who intends to violate anti-corruption rules.

Marlon Samuels, a top-order batsman, played a pivotal role in West Indies’ T20 World Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2016. Over his illustrious career spanning close to two decades, he represented the West Indies in 71 Tests, 207 one-day internationals, and 67 Twenty20 matches between 2000 and 2018.
Alex Marshall, the ICC’s general manager, emphasised that despite Samuels being retired at the time of the offences, the ban was necessary as he was a participant when the violations occurred. Marshall stated, “The ban of six years will act as a strong deterrent to any participant who intends to break the rules.”
The suspension marks a sombre chapter in the career of a cricketer who once stood as a stalwart for West Indies cricket, contributing significantly to their success in the shortest format of the game.
