THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Justice Fathima Beevi, the first woman judge in Supreme Court, passed away at a hospital in Kollam on Thursday morning. She was 96.
A gold medallist from Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram, Beevi started practising as a lawyer at the Kollam district court in 1950 and was appointed as subordinate munsif in 1958. She was appointed as a high court judge in 1984 where she continued till 1989.She was appointed as a judge in Supreme Court in 1989, a post which she held till 1992. She was the first woman in Asia to be appointed as a judge in her country’s apex court.
After her retirement from SC, Beevi was appointed as Tamil Nadu governor in 1997. Her tenure was marred by controversies after AIADMK won the 2001 elections. Beevi invited the late J Jayalalithaa to form the government despite a bar on the AIADMK leader in 2001 from contesting elections over the corruption cases that she was facing then. Despite objections from various quarters, Jayalalithaa was sworn in as chief minister.
Later, when the Jayalalithaa government arrested DMK supremo Karunanidhi, Beevi sent a report to the Centre backing the action. Her move did not go down well with BJP, the main governing party at the Centre which was an ally of DMK. Beevi was immediately recalled by the Centre as TN governor.
Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan, CM Pinarayi Vijayan and other leaders condoled Beevi’s death.
