NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Wednesday ordered the immediate suspension of three Telangana police officers, including a deputy commissioner of police (DCP) posted in Hyderabad, for allegedly trying to dilute a case involving seizure and recovery of Rs 18 lakh, mobile and cheque books and trying to mislead the investigation so as to shield the culprits.
The three police officers against whom the EC also ordered initiation of disciplinary proceedings, to be completed in six months, for “dereliction of duty” and acting in partisan manner are M Venkatswarulu, DCP, Central Zone, Hyderabad; A Yadagiri, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Chikkadpally; and Jahangir Yadav, Inspector of Police, Musheerabad police station.
Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad was authorised by EC to give additional charge/posting to eligible officers for the vacancies arising due to the suspensions.
The action against the three officers followed receipt of a report from special observers on Wednesday informing EC about the seizure and recovery of Rs 18 lakh along with mobile and cheque books on the same day. In a letter sent to the Telangana chief secretary on Wednesday, the EC pointed out that the three police officers, instead of taking proper legal action against the culprits, were apparently trying to dilute the case and mislead the investigation by not naming the accused. This, when the Hyderabad police commissioner had informed that the cash and other items seized were from a vehicle with registration number AP28CH6759 in the Santosh Elite Apartment.
The SHO booked a case under Section 102 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) against unknown persons, even though the name of the owner of the vehicle, cellphone and to whom the money belonged could have been easily and immediately ascertained. As per sources, EC told the chief secretary that Yadav, Yadagiri, and Venkatswarulu were found to be not acting in partisan and not free & fair manner.
Since all police officers are deemed to be on deputation to the EC since notification of elections, the EC directed that the three police officers be placed under suspension with immediate effect and a compliance report be submitted to it. Necessary disciplinary proceedings against them were also ordered.
