GUWAHATI: The demolition of clandestine bases in Myanmar, crucial for Manipur‘s Imphal valley-based insurgent groups, and the recent elimination of wanted insurgent leader Moirangthem Uttam alias Tamba had shifted the dynamics in the lead-up to the signing of a peace agreement between UNLF and the Union and state governments on Wednesday.
“The very backbone of Indian insurgent groups in Myanmar has now been broken. The Imphal valley-based groups had set up these camps decades back with logistic support from the Myanmar army. But now they are all gone,” a security source said.
Uttam, leader of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) militant group, was wanted by NIA for masterminding an ambush in 2015 that claimed the lives of 18 soldiers from the Dogra Regiment. Reports indicate that he was killed in a drone attack in Myanmar on November 23. While the circumstances of his death remained unclear, speculation ranged from possible involvement by Myanmar’s military to interception by Indian security forces.
