Broadcom Inc recently completed its acquisition of software maker VMwareInc, following an unexpectedly long 18-month process that culminated in the deal getting approval in China. Broadcom announced the acquisition in May 2022. Broadcom Chief Executive Officer Hock Tan is reported to be using the deal to build a bigger foothold in so-called hybrid cloud services, which cater to businesses that store data both in their own facilities and outside server farms.“Together we are well positioned to enable global enterprises to embrace private and hybrid cloud environments, making them more secure and resilient,” he said in a statement.
Just days after the completion of the $69 billion acquisition of VMware by Broadcom, job cuts have started at VMWare. Several VMware employees reportedly received the news via email. According to reports, more than 2,000 people learned that they’ll be losing their jobs.
Broadcom’s email to employees impacted by job cuts
A letter sent from Broadcom to impacted employees said Broadcom had “identified go-forward roles that will be required within the combined company.” Here are excerpts from the letter as it appeared in Business Insider.
“Broadcom recently completed its acquisition of VMware. As part of integration planning, and following an organizational needs assessment, we identified go-forward roles that will be required within the combined company. We regret to inform you that your position is being eliminated and your employment will be terminated,” says the email.
“We would like to thank you for your dedication and service. We want to make this transition as smooth as possible, including offering you a generous severance package and providing you a non-working paid notice period,” the email continued.
VMWare hinted at job cuts in September
Incidentally, VMware sent a letter to employees in September saying that they would be offered a job by Broadcom, offered a transitional role, or receive a severance package. VMware — which, as of February, employed more than 38,000 people — had reportedly already cut jobs before the acquisition closed.
Founded in 1998, VMware pioneered virtualization programs, which consolidated applications and workloads on a smaller number of server computers. The innovation made it easier for servers to handle more than one programme.
