Live Streaming: India-Australia T20 cricket series: Here’s what those cumulative views on JioCinema are

[ad_1]

Ever since the first match in the ongoing India-Australia T20 series that is currently being live streamed on JioCinema, many have been wondering about the views that appear on the screen during the match. During India’s first and second T20 matches against Australia, these numbers were more than 200 million. This made many wonder, how the livestream concurrent numbers during these matches were higher than those during the Indian matches of the recently-concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.Even the Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia had peak viewership of 5.9 crore on Disney Hotstar.
Now a report seems to have solved the puzzle. There has been a disconnect in numbers as Viacom18-owned streaming platform JioCinema has switched to displaying the number of cumulative views for all live sporting events, including cricket, instead of peak concurrent viewers, which has been the norm till now. According to a report in Economic Times, the platform started displaying cumulative views for a live match beginning with the India vs Australia ODI series that took place before the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The cumulative views for India’s first and second T20 matches against Australia were 213 million and 220 million, respectively, people close to the matter said.
So, what is the difference
The peak concurrency shows the highest number of viewers during a live stream. This means that the number that appears on the screen is of the viewers that are viewing that livestream at that point in time. While cumulative views are total views that are there for an event. They are similar to the cumulative views that appear for videos on YouTube and Meta. The billing for a digital video ad is also done based on impressions served, they add.
No official statement yet
While JioCinema has not made any official statement on the change in display metrics, according to people in the know, the platform is said to have told advertisers and media agencies that cumulative views are a more transparent and reliable measurement of viewer engagement.
The streaming platform has said that it is most likely to display cumulative views for the upcoming Indian Premier League matches as well, instead of peak concurrency. that shows the highest number of viewers during a live stream.
