The Indian Army is reportedly in the process of developing military-grade 5G and 6Gtelecom apps. According to a report by news agency PTI, quoting Army sources, this is part of a project to address future warfare requirement and roll out critical technologies to enhance overall efficiency. The Army has been endeavouring to exploit 5G for supporting operations in the tactical battlefield area, sources in the defence establishment said.These apps and software are being developed in cooperation with theMinistry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Indian Army is said to be developing military-grade software that includes Artificial Intelligence-enabled decision-making tools and predictive analytics, with an aim to enhance intelligence and operational efficacy.
Aiming for ‘Atma Nirbharta’ in communications
The Military College of Telecommunication Engineering in Madhya Pradesh is said to have evolved into a hub for AI research and development. A 5G lab has been set up at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a 5G testbed was signed between the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering and IIT Madras in August last year. The testbed aims to facilitate validation of military use cases of 5G for a field army. Some of the operational uses being examined include smart surveillance, telemedicine, drone control, and, real-time augmented and virtual reality for training and operations. The partnership between MCTE and IIT-Madras aims to accelerate the Indian Army’s indigenisation efforts to achieve ‘Atma Nirbharta’ in the field of communications.
Innovations like the Situational Awareness Module for Army (SAMA) and advanced pattern recognition software for satellite imagery analysis are examples of notable outcomes from the institute. Several initiatives are also said to have been taken with an aim to upskill Army personnel with the latest advancements in digital and cyber security spheres. The training activities include training on digital video/image and CCTV forensics’ at National Science University (Gandhinagar) and joint training of IT staff at National Informatics Centre (NIC).
The sources said the software to read Enemy’s Electronic Order of Battle (ORBAT) and pattern recognitions, developed by the Army, are functional now.
The Indian Army also has been looking to establish a 5G network along the border to improve communication and get a high-speed data network for operational requirements.
