Moitra to have her say before LS takes up her disqualification matter | India News

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra will get to defend herself on Friday when Lok Sabha takes up the ethics committee’s report that recommended her disqualification from the House over cash-for-query charges.
This was communicated to TMC’s leader in the House Sudip Bandyopadhyay by Speaker Om Birla. The Speaker had called Bandyopadhyay to his chamber on Thursday and informed him that Lok Sabha would take up Moitra’s case on Friday noon, the TMC leader told TOI.
Bandyopadhyay told Birla that the opposition wanted a discussion on the issue in the House. The Speaker said he would allot half-an-hour for it but the TMC leader sought more time. Birla said he would consider the request.
The INDIA bloc has decided to boycott the voting on the resolution to expel Moitra after speaking on the issue and stage a walkout.
They will gather at the Gandhi statue in the Parliament premises and protest against the disqualification. This was decided at the first meeting of floor leaders of INDIA bloc parties on December 4.
The matter was listed as item number five in the list of business on December 4, the opening day of the winter session but was not taken up. While there was no official reason for the matter not being taken up, BJP leaders and government sources said the “party was in a celebratory mood after winning the state elections and did not want to spoil the upbeat atmosphere with an unpleasant issue like the disqualification matter”.
This is the first time since the ethics committee came into existence in the year 2000 that the panel has recommended expulsion of a parliamentarian.
The committee had adopted a report recommending Moitra’s expulsion from LS over cash-for-query allegations. She was accused of asking questions in LS to target the Adani group at the behest of businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for bribes. It was claimed Hiranandani had used her parliamentary login ID to file questions from different places, mostly Dubai.
