While Google and Microsoft are going all the way to adopt AI in their products and services, Apple has essentially stayed away from even using the word. But this seems to have changed a bit since we last checked. Reportedly, the iPhone maker may soon be joining its tech peers in bringing generative AI apps to MacBooks.
A report by The Verge says that the company’s machine learning research team has released a machine learning framework for developers to build models that run efficiently on Apple Silicon.It’s also said to have released a deep learning model library, MLX Data.
“MLX is a NumPy-like array framework designed for efficient and flexible machine learning on Apple silicon, brought to you by Apple machine learning research,” a description reads on GitHub, noting that frameworks like PyTorch, Jax, and ArrayFire inspired the design of MLX.
It is also reported that MLX has enough power to train AI models like Meta’s Llama, and the framework as well as model libraries may help power many of the AI apps in the market now.
Apple sticking to machine learning narrative
The report also says that the models are focused on machine learning and not generative AI applications that the company’s competitors have been working on. In fact, in October, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that Apple executives were caught off guard by the sudden AI boom “and have been scrambling since late last year to make up for lost time.”
“There’s a lot of anxiety about this and it’s considered a pretty big miss internally,” Gurman quoted a person with knowledge of the matter as saying, and added that the company may be developing AI features for iPhones, iPads and others.
Moreover, some reports claimed that Apple has already built its large language model called Ajax and rolled out a chatbot dubbed “Apple GPT” inside the company to test out its functionality.
Soon after the WWDC 2023 presentation, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that he had a different view on the ‘AI features’ in Apple products. He noted that Apple integrates AI into its products today, however, the general public doesn’t necessarily think about those features as AI.
