Tata: Tata plans to invest Rs 40,000 crore for chip plant in Assam

Tata is planning to set up a chip processing plant in Assam and for that the company has submitted a proposal with an outlay of about Rs 40,000 crore. The news comes a day after a report said that the company wants to construct an iPhone factory in Tamil Nadu.
“There is a very good news for us. Tata Electronics Ltd has submitted an application for setting up an electronic centre at Jagiroad,” said Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a function here.He said that the company approached the Centre for the final nod after discussions with the state government.
“They have submitted a proposal to the Government of India with an outlay of about Rs 40,000 crore,” he added. Jagiroad is about 55 km from the state’s largest city Guwahati.
Final approval in a month or two
Sarma said the Tata Group held initial talks with the state government about the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant, and after being satisfied with the discussions, they approached the Centre.
“If all goes well, we will see a major investment in the state which will create a positive environment for industrialisation. We are in touch with the Centre and hope that the final approval will be given in a month or two,” he said.
According to the CM, the conglomerate approached the state government to train 1,000 people for employment in the unit.
“We used to always ask why [the] electronics and IT industry did not come to our state. Now it is changing,” Sarma said.
Tata’s plans with iPhone manufacturing
Tata is also planning to build one of India’s biggest iPhone assembly plants as Apple looks to diversify manufacturing and shipping of its devices as a part of reducing its reliance on China.
Tata wants to construct the factory in Hosur in the southern Tamil Nadu state, the facility is reported to have about 20 assembly lines and employ 50,000 workers within two years. The goal is for the site to be operational in 12 to 18 months.
Meanwhile, Apple is also looking to expand iPhone manufacturing in India, and aiming to produce a fourth of total iPhones in India.
