RAIPUR: Senior tribal leader Vishnu Deo Sai was sworn in as the chief minister of Chhattisgarh along with two deputies, Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah and a galaxy of chief ministers of other BJP-ruled states.
Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan administered the oath of office and secrecy to chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai, 59, and deputy CMs Arun Sao, 56, and Vijay Sharma, 50.
PM Modi waved and bowed before the public, thanking people for propelling the BJP to power with a thumping victory on 54 seats in the 90-member assembly. Modi also exchanged pleasantries with BJP leader Raman Singh, a three-term CM, and former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, who were present on dais.
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma, and Goa CM Pramod Sawant also attended the swearing-in ceremony.
Remembering former Union minister, late Dilip Singh Judeo as his political mentor, Sai told reporters that it was because of him that he joined politics and got the opportunity to become an MLA, MP and then reach the present position. Before proceeding for the swearing-in ceremony, Sai performed rituals with his family at a temple.
Sai, who has been elected from Kunkuri (ST) constituency, is known for his gentle manner and unwavering grassroots connection throughout his 36 years of political life. His journey began as a panchayat member of a remote tribal village and took him to Delhi as a Union minister of state, before he was elevated to the highest office in the state.

Sao was handpicked by the party in August 2022 as the state president to counter the assertive OBC politics of the then-ruling Congress. He belongs to the dominant Sahu community – the largest block among OBCs in the state.
A former deputy advocate general, Sao was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bilaspur in 2019 and is now an MLA from Lormi constituency. His name was also considered for the CM post, but the mantle finally fell on tribal leader Vishnu Deo Sai, considering the BJP’s sweep in the tribal belt.
Sao has been associated with the RSS since childhood and started his political career with Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1996. A lawyer by profession, he practiced in Chhattisgarh high court. There are indications that Sao could be given the crucial portfolio of home.
Vijay Sharma is a first-time legislator from Kawardha. He defeated senior Congress leader and former minister Md Akbar – the lone Muslim member in the 90-member assembly.
Sharma, 50, is the general secretary of the state BJP. He has an MSc in physics from Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University and an MCA from Bhoj Open University, Bhopal. He was a member of the Kawardha zilla panchayat and has worked with a telecom company and then as a teacher in three colleges.
During a communal flare-up in Kawardha on October 3, 2021, Sharma was arrested on charges of abetting the riot and violence but was released on bail. The BJP accused the then Congress government of targeting BJP leaders in Kawardha.
Sharma’s election campaign was high profile, with Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sharma canvassing for him.
They will be deputies to Sai, a grassroots tribal leader considered close to three-time CM Raman Singh.
The BJP’s impressive victory – with wins on 18 ST seats and a sweep of all 14 seats in tribal-dominated Surguja region – contributed to him being made the CM in a state where tribal communities constitute over 32% of the population.
Sai’s political journey started in 1989, progressing from a village panchayat member to a Lok Sabha representative. His tenure as Union minister of state for steel, mines, labour, and employment marked a significant phase in the first Modi government. After the organisational shuffle in BJP a year ago, Sai quietly retreated after serving as the state party chief, ultimately emerging as a surprise choice for the chief ministerial role.
