MUZAFFARNAGAR: A 55-year-old woman from UP’s Aligarh, who was shot in the head by a police sub-inspector last week after she went to the city police station for passport verification as she was planning to go on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital on Wednesday night.
The critically-injured victim, Ishrat Nigar, a resident of Turkman Gate locality in Aligarh, was being treated at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College after she was struck by a bullet.
SSP, Aligarh, Kalanidhi Naithani, said on Thursday, “The SI, Manoj Sharma, is still absconding. A reward of Rs 20,000 was announced and a non-bailable warrant issued by the court against him. Police teams are looking for him. A head constable who was also found responsible was arrested and sent to jail.”
The victim’s body was sent for postmortem and the proceedings were videographed. IPC section 302 (murder) was further added to the FIR. A senior officer, privy to the case, said that following a departmental probe, head constable Sudeep Kumar, who had given the pistol to the SI, was also considered responsible for the “woman’s death”.
The probe’s preliminary findings stated that Sudeep was not supposed to conduct passport enquiry but he still called the woman to the local thana, the police officer said.
Ishrat’s son Ishan Khan claimed they were made to wait for long and when his mother requested SI Sharma to speed up the process, the “cop got angry and opened fire at her”.
The family demanded that the accused SI be held and terminated from his post. They also want a Rs 1 crore compensation and a government job for her kin. The woman was buried on Thursday.
