PATNA: JD(U) leader K C Tyagi on Monday revived the socialists’ long-pending demand of honouring former Bihar chief minister and freedom fighter Karpoori Thakur with ‘Bharat Ratna’, the highest civilian award of the country.
“Socialist leaders from across the country are celebrating the birth centenary of Jannayak Karpoori Thakur this year. The main celebration will be held on January 24 next year. The Centre must consider our demand and honour Karpoori JI with ‘Bharat Ratna’ award posthumously in his birth centenary year,” Tyagi said.
Two-time chief minister of Bihar, Thakur was born on January 24, 1924 at a village in Samastipur district. His native village is now known as Karpoorigram.
Tyagi said Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, RJD president Lalu Prasad and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had time and again urged the Centre to confer ‘Bharat Ratna’ to Karpoori Thakur.
Tyagi further said while JD(U) has planned to organise a series of programmes in memory of Karpoori Ji in Bihar and other places, Jannayak’s followers and socialists from across the country have constituted a national level committee to celebrate his birth anniversary in different parts of the country especially in Delhi, Lucknow and Bhopal.
He said the Jannayak Karpoori Thakur Birth Centenary Celebration Committee, which is headed by former Madhya Pradesh minister Rama Shankar Singh, has chalked out a series of plans to observe Karpoori Ji’s birth centenary.
