On Wednesday morning, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who represents the Kaliabor constituency in Assam and hails from the northeastern region submitted a notice for a no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha.
The decision to bring the no-confidence motion was made during a meeting of the opposition INDIA alliance parties held on Tuesday.
The Congress has also issued a whip in the Lower House of Parliament for its members to be present in its parliamentary office by on Wednesday to “discuss some important issues”.
Despite knowing that the government holds a favorable majority in the Lok Sabha, opposition MPs expressed that the no-confidence motion is a means to demand a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on various issues, particularly the violence in Manipur.
CPI MP Binoy Viswam emphasized that the no-confidence motion is a political move with a specific purpose to compel the Prime Minister to address the Parliament and have a discussion on critical issues, especially those related to Manipur. He acknowledged that the opposition might lack the numbers, but the intention is to bring attention to the concerns.
No-confidence motion: Modi’s ‘prediction’ from 2018 goes viral
Amid the opposition’s move to submit a no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha, a video from 2018 of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to a similar motion has resurfaced and gone viral.
In the video, he humorously taunts the parties behind the motion, suggesting that they should be well-prepared to repeat the exercise in 2023 as well.
During his reply in the Lok Sabha to the no-confidence motion in 2018, Prime Minister Modi said, “I want to send you my good wishes that you prepare so much that you get a chance to bring a no-confidence motion again in 2023.”
The government sources shared this part of Modi’s speech to highlight his “prediction”.
AAP accuses BJP of obstructing functioning of Parliament
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Tuesday launched another scathing attack on the BJP regarding the Manipur violence, stating that the Opposition would move a no-confidence motion.
Chadha accused the BJP of obstructing the functioning of Parliament and expressed the need to hold the government accountable and address the concerns of the people.
“The state of Manipur is in turmoil, and there are fears that this instability might spread to other states in the Northeast. In response to this grave situation, we are bringing a no-confidence motion against the ruling government,” Chadha tweeted.
