In April, Bumrah underwent surgery on his lower back in New Zealand.
In a press conference ahead of the first ODI against the West Indies, India captain Rohit Sharma gave an update on Bumrah’s road to recovery and rehabilitation.
On Bumrah’s comeback for the forthcoming tour of Ireland before the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, Rohit said, “The kind of experience he (Bumrah) brings for the team is very important. But he is coming back after a big injury. I don’t even know if he (Bumrah) would be going to Ireland or not as the team has not been selected for that tour yet. It will be good he gets to play matches, we will try that he gets to play more and more matches before the World Cup, because when you come back from such a big injury, the match fitness is missing. So according to me, if he (Bumrah) plays more and more matches, it will be good for him and the team also. So we will see how many matches he (Bumrah) plays in one month, what all we have planned for him, it all depends on how much recovery has happened to him, we are in constant touch with the NCA, it looks quite positive at the moment, so that’s a good thing.”
Bumrah is in the final stage of rehabilitation after undergoing surgery. Known for his ability to bowl toe-crushing full-length deliveries, Bumrah has claimed 319 wickets across all three international formats.
After the West Indies tour, India are slated to play a three-match T20I series in Ireland from August 18 to 23.
India will next be seen in action at the Asia Cup from August 30 to September 17.
India will get to fine tune their World Cup preparations with a three-match ODI series against Australia in September.
These will be their last assignments before India host the marquee ODI World Cup from October 5.
