NEW DELHI: In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Tuesday stopped the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from recording the statements of two Manipuri women who were victims of a horrific assault.

The CBI, which was poised to take the statements of the survivors, faced a dilemma as the court was scheduled to hear a batch of petitions related to the case at 2 pm today.
The counsel for the Manipuri women, Nizam Pasha urged the apex court to prevent the CBI from recording the statements until after the conclusion of the court hearing.

However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta expressed his concerns about the urgency of recording the statements. He argued that regardless of the CBI’s actions, they could be faulted for either acting too promptly or delaying the process.
In response to the situation, a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Chandrachud instructed the Solicitor General to convey to the CBI that they must await the outcome of today’s hearing. “Ask the CBI to wait till the outcome of today’s hearing,” Chief Justice Chandrachud said.
