It said the NCB shares satellite imagery regarding illicit cultivation of cannabis and opium poppy with the Manipur police and also participates in the destruction. Also, 1,869 cases reglating to seizure of drugs were registered by drug law enforcement agencies in Manipur between 2018 and May 2023, in which 2,622 people were arrested.
This information was shared with Rajya Sabha amid speculations that Manipur police’s action on opium poppy cultivation in the hills was a factor behind the violence that broke out in the state in May. Junior minister Nityanand Rai said NCB had identified two places to instal vehicle scanners at the international border and hinterland of Manipur to check drugs movement.
