I am feeling lunar gravity,’ is the first message that India’s third lunarcraft sent to the Isro centres back to the Earth after entering the Moon’s orbit that the space agency tweeted on Saturday. The spacecraft made the lunar orbit entry after escaping Earth’s gravity and covering a long distance of 384,400 km.
It’s three out of three for Isro, which guided Chandrayaan-3 into a lunar orbit without a glitch, four years after it achieved a similar feat with Chandrayaan-2 and 15 years after Chandrayaan-1. On the next plan, Isro chairman S Somanath told TOI, “We are very happy.
There is already a programme to process, starting from tomorrow [Sunday], as per the plan. There are five different burns (manoeuvres) to bring the spacecraft closer to the innermost circle of 100km (altitude) from the Moon’s surface.” Lauding Isro’s achievement, space minister Jitendra Singh tweeted: “The journey continues uninterrupted as the Moon draws closer and closer!”
Once it achieves a 100km circular orbit, the landing module comprising Vikram (lander) and Pragyan (rover) will separate from the propulsion module on August 17. The soft-landing of the craft on the lunar surface will be attempted on August 23.
