West Indies vs India T20: How India lost the 2nd T20I against West Indies | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Surviving a late scare, West Indies beat India by 2 wickets in the 2nd T20I in Guyana on Sunday. The Windies won with 7 balls to spare to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

What went wrong for India:

  • India won the toss and chose to bat but lost opener Shubman Gill (7) and T20 specialist Suryakumar Yadav (1) by the 4th over to be 18/2, a woeful start. Shubman Gill hasn’t really clicked on this tour and big runs are still missing from the blade of Suryakumar Yadav.

  • The only bright spot in the Indian innings was a 42-run stand between Tilak Varma (51) and Ishan Kishan (27). Hardik Pandya did his best to reinforce the Indian innings but fell after an 18-ball 24.

  • Rest of the batting crumbled as Akeal Hosein (2-29), Alzarri Joseph (2-28) and Romario Shepherd (2-28) did most of the damage for the hosts, to restrict India to 152/7, a below par score.

What worked for West Indies

  • Nicholas Pooran, fresh from his exploits in the Major League Cricket, in which he led MI New York to the inaugural title with an unbeaten hundred, smashed 4 sixes and 6 fours in his 40-ball 67.

  • West Indies suffered a dramatic collapse as they were reduced from 126/4 to 129/8, losing four wickets for just three runs.

  • But the Indians failed to capitalise on the collapse and the West Indies, still needing 24 runs off 4 overs with only 2 wickets, held their nerves and were saved by Akeal Hosein (16 not out) and Alzarri Joseph (10 not out), who shared an unbroken 26-run stand to take West Indies to 155/8 in 18.5 overs.

For the first time since 2016 the West Indies have won back to back T20Is against India. The Men in Blue will now have to win all 3 remaining T20Is if they are to win the series.
