Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that Indian students pursuing master’s degrees in France will now be given a five-year long-term post-study visa instead of the earlier two-year work visas after their postgraduation.
Modi made the announcement, which drew the largest cheer, during his address to the Indian community at LA Seine Musicale in Paris. Observing that the world is moving towards a “new order”, Modi said India’s capability and role are changing fast — be it climate change, supply chains, counterterrorism or counter radicalism.
The world is looking to India to find solutions to its present challenges and decades-old issues, Modi said. He said the with the diverse growth and development the country has achieved in the last 10 years, including becoming the fifth largest economy, the world believes it won’t be long before it becomes a five trillion economy.
During his interaction in Paris, Modi announced that besides long-term work visa for students, an agreement had also been reached for use of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in France.
“The last time I came to France, it was decided that Indian students in France would be given a two-year post-study work visa. Now, it has been decided that Indian students pursuing Masters in France will be given a long-term post-study visa of five years,” said Modi.
France has been a sought-after study and work destination among students, scientists, managers, engineers, thinkers, artists and writers.
Ranked fourth favourite destination for international students, the country offers a wide range of higher education programmes. Of the 2.7 million students in the higher education institutions in France, 14% are international students. In 2019, nearly 10,000 Indian students chose to pursue higher studies in France.
