NEW DELHI: At least eight soldiers and a junior commissioned officer died on Saturday after the truck they were travelling in met with an accident and fell into a 60-foot-deep gorge in Ladakh. Defence officials said another personnel was critically injured.
Leh Senior Superintendent of Police P D Nitya said the Army vehicle, with 10 personnel on board, was on its way to Nyoma when its driver lost control and it plunged into a gorge around 4.45 pm. The troops, belonging to an artillery unit, were moving from Karu garrison to Kyari near Leh.
A police team rushed to the spot and all the injured soldiers were shifted to an Army medical facility where eight personnel were declared dead. Another jawan died subsequently, she said. The officer said one more jawan was undergoing treatment and his condition was stated to be “critical”.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh condoled the deaths.
