SRINAGAR: A woman on Amarnath Yatra was killed when boulders came shooting down hillsides during rain late Saturday evening, while another pilgrim died of suspected heart attack on Sunday.
Two J&K cops who tried to save Gujarat’s Urmilaben, 53, were critically injured when the stones fell on them between Sangam Top and Lower Cave in south Kashmir on way to the Shiva cave-shrine, officials said.
In another tragedy, eight CRPF personnel on way to join the yatra from Baltal were injured when their vehicle fell into a ditch on Sunday.
While Urmilaben died of her wounds at the spot, injured cops Mohammed Salem and Mohammed Yaseen were airlift-lifted by chopper to a Srinagar hospital. They are part of the Mountain Rescue Team of J&K Police deployed for the safety of the pilgrims.
J&K police chief Dilbag Singh condoled Urmilaben’s death while lauding the two cops who tried to save her risking their own lives.
On Sunday, Chhattisgarh native Meghnath, 65, was found unconscious near Pissutop along the Pahalgam route to the shrine. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, officials said.
Officials said Sunday the yatra was continuing. So far, 24 pilgrims have died due to various causes during the annual yatra that began July 1 and will continue around two months. The latest fatalities take the toll to 26.
Around 7,000 yatris trek up to the shrine daily through the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. Urmilaben had started from Pahalgam.
Later on Sunday, the eight CRPF personnel’s vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the ditch in the Nilgrath area of Baltal.
Three of the jawans were seriously injured, and one of them, Patil Bhattu, was referred to SKIMS Hospital in Srinagar, an official said. He described the condition of the others as “stable”. The troopers had taken leave for the yatra, the official said.
