NEW DELHI: Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said that Nipah outbreak reported from Kozhikode district is under control but the threat is not over yet.
The chief minister said that the chance of a second wave of the virus cannot be ruled out.
“Even ICMR could not provide a clear answer as to why Nipah cases are being reported from Kozhikode district,” Vijayan said.
The chief minister said that early detection of the virus averted a dangerous situation and the state health system could effectively prevent its spread.
Narrating the steps taken by the government to check the prevention of the disease, Vijayan said currently 994 people are under surveillance.
Samples of 304 people were collected, and of this, the test results of 267 people have been received, he added.
He said six people tested positive and nine people are under observation at Kozhikode Medical College.
With no new cases of Nipah virus infection reported in the state in the last three days, the Disaster Management Department in Kerala’s Kozhikode has relaxed the restrictions in the district.
State health minister Veena George had said on Monday that the situation regarding the latest Nipah outbreak in Kerala was completely under control.
More than 200 samples from the high-risk contacts had tested negative much to the relief of the state government.
